Peanut butter strikes as one of those love-hate foods where you either worship it and can devour the whole container at once by the spoonful, or it’s not your cup of tea. But what about all the other butters out there? Almond? Sunflower seed? Hazelnut? Cashew? So many options, all with different tastes and health benefits. In the end, the caloric intake of all are

almost identical, with around 190 calories per serving. Just be cautious with the ingredients, because added sugars and certain oils (except for coconut!) are unnecessary and essentially junk food in disguise. In terms of health benefits, protein content is also similar, except for macadamia nut butter which only has two grams of protein, while peanut butter has eight. And then hazelnut butter has double the calcium of peanut butter, but almond butter wins in that category.

The recipe possibilities are endless and you can get creative with them. Nut butters are always a fun and easy place to start. Here are some guidelines on homemade nut butters (whether or not to soak, etc) while below are a few recipes to get you started.

Peanut Butter Banana Cups via Honestly Yumm

  • 15 ounces of dark or milk chocolate (whichever you prefer), chopped
  • 1 cup of smooth peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1-2 bananas, sliced about 1/4 inch thick

  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
